The
Great Lakes League Welcomes the Southern Ohio Copperheads
By: Homer Dawson
The
Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League is a summer baseball
league dedicated to the improvement and development of
collegiate baseball players. All three divisions of college
baseball are represented on the rosters of the 11 teams
that make up the league.
The
Great Lakes league is a wooden bat league, forcing the
players to leave the aluminum bats at home for the summer
and play baseball the old fashioned way. The league has
franchises in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania, each playing
in local stadiums.
The
league is sponsored and supported by both the NCAA and
Major League Baseball. The league boasts over 50 alumni
who have made the leap to the majors. Of last summer's
rosters, five players were named all Americans in Division
111, including Drew Caravella of Ohio Wesleyan University,
who was named the 2002 Division III player of the year.
The
league A U expanded for the 2002 season, adding
two teams, one in Murrysville, PA and your Southern Ohio
Copperheads! Look for Great Lakes Summer Baseball and
the Copperheads to be a part of Southern Ohio summers
for years to come.
